The Reinheitsgebot (literally: purity order) has its origin in Bavaria. Therefore, it is also called Bavarian Reinheitsgebot. The Bavarian Reinheitsgebot was decreed by the Bavarian Duke William IV in Ingolstadt. This decree ruled the price for beer as well as its ingredients.

The adoption of the Reinheitsgebot in national legislation is defined in the German Beer Taxation Act in 1906.

Until 1998 the Reinheitsgebot was considered to be the oldest food law.
