In order to brew a good beer you only need these four: water, grain, some hops and yeast. The rest is technique and brewing experience which are based on old principles, but have been improved and refined in the course of time. Consequently, today’s beers differ quite a bit from the ones brewed in simple beer kitchens centuries ago.
The high quality of beer today is crucially dependent on the raw materials which are used in the brewing process. After all, one water doesn’t match another water, as opposed to former presumptions. Grain has to be malted in a complex procedure in order to be used for beer production. As for the hops, it is most important of which type it is and where it was grown. Finally, the type of yeast is formative for the beer style.
