Kölsch as a Protected Geographical Indication of origin
By introducing an own label the EU Commission shows that consumers have only known little about regionally acknowledged EU-specialities so far. The European Union law about appreciated designations of origin has already been resolved seven years ago and 476 products have been listed as “worthy of protection” since. Nevertheless, it has not been labelled on the products.

So far, the products could only carry the abbreviations PGI for “Protected Geographical Indication” and PDO for “Protected Designation of Origin”. Abbreviations which could hardly be interpreted, even by experts. The EU-Logo was introduced by the European Commission for EU Member States through the European Union law no. 1726/98 on 22.07.1998.

A standardised logo is now supposed to strengthen the signal effect for the consumer in terms of the awareness level and information. The existence of this logo marks a guarantee for the European consumer and highlights the designation of origin of these products. This way we can create a higher level of trust towards our product "Kölsch".

It is a core criterion for the listing as PDO or PGI that an agricultural product or a foodstuff marks a close connection between its character and its geographic origin. There are detailed criteria to be met in order to define a product as worthy of protection.

60 german products have already been listed, including Kölsch. The Kölsch-producing breweries are bound to fixed regulations and criteria. Having listed one’s product will protect the producer extensively against competitors who want to launch similar products. All fallacious or misleading indications which refer to origin, provenance, nature or other characteristics of the appreciated products are forbidden.

Moreover, advertisement and packaging must not create associations to the appreciated product.
